Recapturing that “Tar-zhay” magic

Target CEO Brian Fiddelke

With Target‘s leadership transition underway, many are speculating about early moves by incoming CEO Michael Fiddelke and what it will take to reignite growth vis-a-vis rivals like Walmart, Amazon, and Costco Wholesale.

I recently shared my thoughts with both Carson Hartzog of The Minnesota Star Tribune and Jason DeRusha of WCCO | CBS News Minnesota.

As I shared with Carson, quickly getting through the pain of restructuring and capturing savings to reinvest makes a lot of sense: “These are mostly going after savings opportunities to then fund growth initiatives that will have to be much more significant than just leaning out the headquarters.”

With that growth lens, Jason and I discussed the potential for Target to differentiate through private brands, baby, and beauty: “I think there’s always an opportunity to have something unique and different, and that’s where your own brands, private brands can play a role.” While baby and beauty have been destination categories where Target has offered a differentiated, elevated assortment of brands and experience.

What would you do to get the magic back and reignite growth at Target?
